Zamboanga’s Local School Board Proposes In-person Classes

As the year comes to an end with the employment of the new system of education through blended-modular distance learning, the Local School Board (LSB) with the chairmanship of Mayor Beng Climaco discussed the plan to transition back into in-person learning under the new normal last Thursday, December 03.

City Schools Division Chief Dr. Roy Tuballa presented the 1-1-3-20-5 model during the meeting with the LSB. This model was proposed by DepEd Zamboanga City under the Sulong EduKalidad program of the Department of Education. Sulong EduKalidad’s mission is to develop innovation in the delivery of instructions aiming to have a flexible structure that fits the students’ need for quality education.

According to a post on Mayor Climaco’s official Facebook page, the 1-1-3-20-5 model will categorize schools according to their quarantine status, location, availability of teachers, and readiness of health protocols. Learners and schools will be matched and divided into smaller groups of twenty learners that will meet three hours per week to learn five core subjects: English, Math, Science, Filipino, and Araling Panlipunan. The said face-to-face learning model stands for 1 Grade Level, 1 Section, 3 Hours Per Week and 20 Learners Per Class, and 5 Core Subjects.

The learners will be profiled according to their learning aptitude, academic challenges, health conditions, availability of support at home, and whether or not their parents would consent to face-to-face learning.

The DepEd city official is likewise suggesting the idea of splitting Zamboanga into two divisions for a better response to the needs and concerns of different school districts.

The Department of Health said on Wednesday, December 02, that it was open to resuming face-to-face classes in the Philippines but only in areas where there is “low to minimal risk” of coronavirus cases.
