AdZU rallies for 38th EDSA anniversary, protests against ChaCha

“Unity is not the end, but it’s a means for us to care for others,” stated Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) University President Fr. Guillrey Anthony Andal, SJ, in his opening remarks to highlight the importance of vigilance and unity in protecting democracy and upholding national security during The Fight for Democracy rally for EDSA 38 and Protest Against Charter Change last February 23, 2024.

The Union of Students for the Advancement of Democracy (USAD) hosted the rally and protest in collaboration with El Consejo Atenista (ECA) and the Education Academic Organization (EAO) at Bellarmine-Campion Lobby.

USAD Party Premier Ezikiel Pamaran delivered the opening statement and strongly opposed the Charter Change by expressing “Para sa demokrasya, say no to Chacha.”

College School of Liberal Arts Faculty Member Mr. Hezekiah Conception lectured on the History of EDSA People Power, while Senior High School (SHS) Social Sciences Faculty Member Mr. Rovic Eslao discussed the political issue of Charter Change. Both emphasized that the spirit of People Power is not just a historical event but a continual call to action for citizens to remain vigilant in safeguarding the country’s safety.

They further emphasized that Filipinos’ greatest weapon against threats to national security is their unwavering commitment to upholding the values of democracy, justice, and freedom and reminded that politics is platform-based instead of personality-based.

Moreover, EAO Governor and Majority Leader of the Board of College Governors (BOCG) Via Mariz Espejo expressed in her Call to Action speech, “As youths and torchbearers of change, it is our responsibility to amplify our voices and mobilize our communities. Together, let us march forward with courage and conviction, knowing that our voices have the power to shape the course of history.”

The EDSA People Power Revolution commemoration served as a reminder that the struggle for democracy is an ongoing battle requiring constant vigilance and active participation.

The event concluded with a candle-lighting ceremony attended by SHS and Higher Education students, rekindling the spirit of EDSA and Filipinos’ commitment to upholding democracy and safeguarding the welfare of the country.
